SEPTEMBER 18, 1990
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FRANK. YOU KNOW, A FEW OF US HAVE BEEN LOCKED UP AT ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE FOR THE PAST TEN DAYS, AND WHEN THOSE BUDGET TALKS BEGAN, I GAVE PRESIDENT BUSH A GIANT BASEBALL BAT, HIS 'BIG BUDGET STICK.'
WELL, BASEBALL DIDN'T DO THE TRICK AT ANDREWS, BUT AS I LOOK AROUND HERE AND SEE BIG GUYS LIKE MEL BLOUNT (BLUNT) AND SOME OF THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS, I THINK PERHAPS WE NEED THE NFL TOUCH - - ONE LOOK AT SOME OF YOU GUYS COMING INTO THE TALKS MIGHT GET US GOING AND SETTLE THE BUDGET ONCE AND FOR ALLI WE COULD CALL IT 'THE BIG BUDGET BLITZ.' WITHOUT IT, WE MAY NEED A LAST MINUTE 'HAIL MARY' PASS TO COMPLETE THE JOB.
I AM HONORED TO BE HERE TONIGHT AT THIS IMPORTANT EVENT FOR THE SCHOOL FOR CONTEMPORARY EDUCATION. SCHOOLS LIKE THIS GREAT INSTITUTION IN ANNANDALE ARE ON THE FRONT LINE OF OUR NATION'S EFFORTS TO HELP PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES GET OFF THE SIDELINES AND INTO THE MAINSTREAM OF AMERICAN LIFE.
THE GROWTH OF THIS SCHOOL, AND OTHERS LIKE IT, COMES AT A GREAT TIME IN THIS COUNTRY FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES BECAUSE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTED BY THE LANDMARK AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES A CT. ON THE BOOKS SINCE JULY, THE ADA IS TEARING DOWN BARRIERS TO PARTICIPATION FOR SOME 43 MILLION AMERICANS WHO PREVIOUSLY LACKED ADEQUATE CIVIL RIGHTS PROTECTIONS.
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THIS HONOR, AND THANKS TO THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE AND FREDDIE MAC FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING SUPPORT FOR EDUCATION FOR THE DISABLED. -
