Dear Bob:
Thank you very much for your kind invitation requesting my participation in the meeting of the Jury of the Henry B. Betts Award. I deeply regret that I was unable to be with you at the home of Fred Prince to choose the recipient from among the twenty-five outstanding and dedicated nominees. Although the selection of only one candidate must have been tremendously difficult, I can not think of a more qualified and deserving recipient than Judith Heumann.

I was elated to learn from your letter that Judy will be this year's recipient of the 1990 Betts Award. As founder and Associate Director of the World Institute on Disability (WID), Judy has been not only a forceful and tireless advocate on behalf of people with disabilities, but also a passionate and eloquent voice for the silent Americans who have not yet enjoyed full independence and integration. With the dedicated efforts of people such as Judy Heumann, my peers with disabilities will have a greater opportunity to live lives of dignity and self support.

Again, thank you for your diligent efforts to recognize and reward the stellar advocates of the disability community. I am very appreciative of your sponsorship of the Henry B. Betts Award and look forward to working with you in the future.

With Warmest Personal Regards.

Sincerely,
