Re: October Surprise meeting, Thursday, May 21, 4:00 pm.
Key points to make with Jeffords:
o REPUBLICANS IN THE SENATE AND ON THE COMMITTEE OVERWHELMINGLY OPPOSE THE OCTOBER SURPRISE INVESTIGATION, SEEING IT AS A POLITICALLY MOTIVATED WITCHHUNT.
o IF THE INVESTIGATION CANNOT BE BROUGHT BACK UNDER SOME CONTROL, WHERE THE CONSENSUS REPUBLICAN VIEWPOINT IS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT, MOST REPUBLICANS ARE PREPARED TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO SIMPLY DISCREDIT AND SHUT DOWN THE WHOLE INVESTIGATION. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE YOU CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE.
o WE ALL RESPECT YOUR VIEWPOINT, WHICH IS DIFFERENT THAN OURS. WE DON'T EXPECT YOU TO GIVE UP YOUR SINCERE BELIEFS.
o BUT CONSENSUS REPUBLICAN VIEWS MUST BE REPRESENTED MORE EFFECTIVELY IF/AS THE INVESTIGATION GOES FORWARD.
o RIGHT NOW, YOUR COMMITTEE COLLEAGUES FEEL NOT ONLY UNREPRESENTED, BUT ACTUALLY CUT OUT OF THE PROCESS.
o OVERALL, THE SENSE IS THAT YOU AND SANFORD (AND YOUR STAFFERS) ARE MAKING DECISIONS AND CUTTING DEALS, AND REPUBLICANS ARE BEING INFORMED AFTERWARDS -- NOT CONSULTED AS PART OF THE PROCESS.
o AT A MINIMUM, I HOPE YOU WILL AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING:
-- CONSULT FULLY WITH YOUR REPUBLICAN COLLEAGUES BEFORE SIGNING ON TO ANYTHING ELSE.
-- INSIST WITH SANFORD AND THE OTHER DEMOCRATS THAT THE REPUBLICANS ON THE SUBCOMMITTEE BE FULLY INVOLVED IN ALL IMPORTANT DECISION-MAKING -- THAT ALL THEIR RIGHTS AND PREROGATIVES ARE PROTECTED, AND THEY ARE ACCORDED THE CHANCE TO HAVE THEIR IN-PUT.
-- REFUSE TO TAKE PART IN OR ENDORSE ANY DECISIONS TAKEN BY SANFORD OR OTHER DEMOCRATS WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OR PARTICIPATION OF SUBCOMMITTEE REPUBLICANS.
o ALTERNATIVELY, THAT YOU VOLUNTARILY STEP ASIDE FROM YOUR RANKING MEMBER POSITION SOLELY FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS INVESTIGATION -- CONTINUING AS RANKING MEMBER FOR OTHER SUBCOMMITTEE BUSINESS.
