Dear Sam:
We need to set the record straight on the 1980's. A number of Senators have expressed concern about our ability to respond to questions like: Did the rich get richer and the poor poorer during the 1980's? The likely Democratic standard bearer and Congressional Democrats continue to bash the Reagan/Bush Republican record.
A small strategy group should get together soon to discuss this issue. We encourage you to bring any appropriate officials from the Administration you feel necessary. Among others, we believe Director Darman, Secretary Brady, and CEA Chairman Boskin would add much to such a meeting. We would also suggest that at some future time we would bring the President's campaign officials -- like Teeter and others -- into our discussions.
What are Republicans being accused of having done or not done, is it true or not, and what is our response to these charges? What has President Bush proposed and where has Congress failed to act on those proposals? We believe a pooling of our staff resources to identify such issues and to develop quick, concise, responses to them should be a high priority of all Republicans.
Senator Domenici has talked to the President about this and he appeared quite receptive.
We would like to get together on Monday, May 18 at 3:00 p.m. in S-230 of the Capitol. I hope you can attend.
