Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter and I hope that you will join me in urging the President to invite Mr. Mandela to speak.

On February 11, 1990, millions of people around the world rejoiced as South African anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela walked to freedom through the gates of Victor Verster prison after twenty-seven and a half years of captivity. We commend you on your decision to telephone Mr. Mandela on this important day and for inviting him to meet with you at the White House.
Given the profound significance of Nelson Mandela's release and the hope it represents for a peaceful settlement to the conflict in South Africa, we urge you extend this courageous man an invitation to address a joint meeting of the United States Congress. We believe that the inspirations and insights which Nelson Mandela can share with Members of the House and Senate would be invaluable as we strive to better understand the fluid situation in South Africa and what the future holds for that country.
We welcome the opportunity to assist South Africa in becoming a more free and democratic nation and look forward to hearing from you on this matter.
