Subject: American Issues Forum

The Douglas County Bicentennial Commission is sponsoring the series of town meetings called the American Issues Forum. This project has been developed by the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration and the National Endowment for the Humanities. it is designed to help Americans examine their history and their goals, and to affirm and renew their pride and faith in the American way of life. Any citizen, regardless of age or circumstance, is urged to participate in these dialogues. There will be regular opportunities for this throughout Douglas County from September, 1975, through May 1976. If enough interest is shown, meetings can be held simultaneously in various parts of the county. Meetings may be weekly or monthly and will be open to everyone who is interested.
There is a need for moderators for the series and if you or your organization would be wiling to sponsor one of the meetings, please contact me as soon as possible. Your responsibilities would be simple. Read the short essay related to the topic of the week or month. Attend the meeting. Initiate the dialogue concerning the topic. One and one-half or two hours will be the average length of meetings. As the moderator you would be expected to contribute your own ideas, listen to the ideas of the other participant, and offer some sort of brief summary at the close of the meeting. A team approach is possible, so if you know someone you would like to work with, get together and discuss it. An organization could conduct one of the meetings, including not only its own members, but anyone else who would like to participate.
This is an opportunity for every citizen to participate in our nation's bicentennial in a very personal way. "An effort at orderly public discourse seems an especially fitting way to commemorate the nation's founding, for the Declaration of Independence was itself the product of well-ordered debate."

Here are the topics: Time and places for meetings to be announced.
September, 1975: A Nation of Nations
October, 1975: The Land of Plenty
November, 1975: Certain Unalienable Rights
December, 1975: A more Perfect Union; The American Government
January, 1976: Working in America
February, 1976: The Bbusiness of America
March, 1976: America in the World
April, 1976: Growing up in America
May, 1976: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

Send this form to Celenece Hills, 845 Illinois, Lawrence, Kansas 66044.
