MEMORANDUM

February 4, 1987

To: SENATOR DOLE

Subject: MEETING WITH SECRETARY SHULTZ, TODAY, 2:15 PM

MEETING WITH SHULTZ. Shultz arrives at 2:15 pm for a brief meeting with you. He will be accompanied by Dick Murphy (Assistant Secretary for the Middle East) and Ed Fox (Assistant Secretary for Congressional Relations). The main item on Shultz's agenda: to suggest setting up periodic get-togethers, to keep each other informed of events in your respective arenas.

Two things you may want to raise with him: (1) Plans for the Embassy in Lebanon. One tidbit I hear on the grapevine: State plans to spend $8 million this year to build a new Embassy building in Beirut.

(2) The nuclear testing treaties. Shultz and Carlucci Deputy General Powell reportedly were the two who pushed for the accommodation with Pell. It might be worthwhile reminding Shultz that dealing with Democrats, before Republicans, is not a good idea.

• ARMS SALE MEETING. The Senators for the arms sales meeting arrive at 2:30 pm. The invitees:
