The Honorable Robert J. Dole
141 Senate Hart Office Building
Washington, DC 20510-1601

Dear Senator Dole:
The drug crisis in our cities is a major concern of the nation's mayors. Over twenty mayors will meet in New York City on August 26th to develop a consensus for action to respond to the crisis and to discuss pending legislation. On September 8th they will convene in Washington to explore further the appropriate roles for the federal government and to meet with you and other Congressional leaders to discuss passage of legislation by this Congress.

The co-chairs of the Task Force on Drug Control, Mayors Dick Berkley of Kansas City and Ed Koch of New York City, have asked that I contact you to arrange a meeting of our Task Force with you on the 8th. It is critical that we have an opportunity to discuss the importance of action on major drug legislation by the Senate before Congress adjourns. The mayors will be pleased to do this at your convenience during the later part of the afternoon of September 8th. A list of members of our Task Force on Drug Control is enclosed. We expect many of these mayors to be in Washington on the 8th.

We will be in touch with your office shortly to arrange a time which is mutually convenient.

Sincerely,

THE CITY OF NEW YORK
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
NEW YORK, N.Y. 10007

August 15, 1986

Hon. Robert J. Dole
United States Senate
141 Senate Hart Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator Dole (crossed out and replaced with "Bob"):
The national drug crisis we face has intensified in the last few months to a point where local enforcement efforts have been valiantly swimming against the tide. What is needed is a way to stem the flow of narcotics as they make their way into this country, an endeavor that must be led by the Federal government.

To focus on the concerns that municipalities have in this area, an estimated thirty to forty Mayors and County Executives from across the country will meet in New York City later this month to reach a consensus on anti-narcotics actions.

After this meeting, we plan to travel to Washington on September 8th to share our plans with Members of Congress in the hope that our input will assist in shaping the legislative efforts now underway.

It would be greatly appreciated if a small group of us could meet with you that afternoon. I'm sure you will be interested in what we will present. I will contact your office in the next week to arrange for a specific time. Many thanks.

All the best.

Sincerely,

The Honorable Robert J. Dole
