REMARKS OF SENATOR BOB DOLE
INTRODUCING DR. JONAS SAVIMBI, LEADER OF UNITA
LUNCHEON IN HONOR OF DR. SAVIMBI
FEBRUARY 5, 1986

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, DR. SAVIMBI:

EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM, I THINK, KNOWS DR. SAVIMBI VERY WELL. MOST OF US HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO SEE AND TALK TO HIM AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER OVER THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS -- MANY OF YOU WERE AT MY RECEPTION ON MONDAY. AND I KNOW YOU'D RATHER HEAR FROM HIM THAN FROM ME.
SO LET ME JUST SAY THAT DR. SAVIMBI'S PRESENCE HERE:
-- REMINDS US THAT THE SOVIETS AND THEIR ALLIES ARE STILL ON THE MARCH, IN AFRICA AND AROUND THE GLOBE.
-- REMINDS US THAT THERE ARE MANY, MANY PEOPLE -- FROM KAMPUCHEA, THROUGH AFGHANISTAN AND NICARAGUA, AS WELL AS IN ANGOLA -- WHO ARE STILL WILLING TO STAND UP TO THE SOVIETS' MIGHT AND FIGHT FOR THEIR OWN FREEDOM.
("MATTER OF OUR OWN NATIONAL INTEREST" in the following line is underlined)
-- AND, FINALLY, REMINDS US THAT THE UNITED STATES, AS LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD AND AS A MATTER OF OUR OWN NATIONAL INTEREST, MUST STAND WITH THOSE LIKE JONAS SAVIMBI WHO ARE STRUGGLING FOR FREEDOM AND SELF-DETERMINATION.
I'M PROUD TO INTRODUCE DR. JONAS SAVIMBI AND ASK HIM TO SAY A FEW WORDS.
