Dear Senator Dole;
At a time when the cost of doing business is at an all time high with no apparent relief in sight, I can not agree with the government's insisting that all women workers be granted a paid maternity leave. This would only help raise the cost of doing business instead of finding ways to lower it.
The price of our products must be raised to compensate for additional costs; consequently, the end result is more inflation.
Our firm supplies millwork and hardware for numerous government contract jobs. We are constantly working on ways to keep our costs down so that we may keep the products we sell at a lower price.
I would be interested in hearing your viewpoint on the paid maternity leave for women workers.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. (redacted):
This is in response to your April 5 letter concerning the recent Supreme Court decision in the case of General Electric v. Gilbert.
Legislation has been introduced in both the House and the 6 Senate which would amend Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to include a prohibition of discrimination on the basis of pregnancy.
The House Legislation is currently before the House Committee on Education and Labor. One day of hearings has been held, and hearings were recessed subject to call. In other words, future hearings are anticipated, but none have been scheduled. The Senate version of this legislation is before the Committee on Human Resources, which is expected to hold hearings later this month.
I will keep your comments in mind should this legislation come before me in the Senate for a vote.
Sincerely yours,
BOB DOLE
United States Senator
