BOB DOLE KANSAS
United States Senate OFFICE OF THE MAJORITY LEADER WASHINGTON, DC 20510
February 7, 1985
Dear Colleague:
On January 24th, I introduced, with the President's support, S. 272, the "Civil Rights Amendments Act of 1985." The purpose of the bill is to overturn that part of last year's Supreme Court decision in Grove City College v. Bell which dealt with the scope of Title IX's prohibition against sex discrimination in any Federally funded "education program or activity."
The bill is identical to the final compromise I offered during negotiations that occurred on this issue in the last few days of the 98th Congress. I am offering it again in the hope that this year we can build consensus on what proved to be a highly controversial issue.
Attached is the President's statement in support of the bill and an explanatory Q and A prepared in consultation with the Justice Department.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or Sheila Bair of my staff at 224-3135.
Sincerely yours, [signature] Bob [end signature]
BOB DOLE Majority Leader
