WASHINGTON - Senate Republican leader Bob Dole and Secretary of Labor Elizabeth Dole will depart Washington Friday morning on an official visit to Morocco, Soviet Armenia, Poland and The Netherlands, including meetings with Polish President Wojciech Jaruzelski, Solidarity leader Lech Walesa and Polish Catholic Cardinal Glemp. In addition, the Doles will have audiences with Moroccan King Hassan II and Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands.
The White House announced the trip Wednesday evening. The Senator and the Secretary will carry President Bush's greetings to the heads of state they will meet. At the request of the president they will report back their findings and recommendations, primarily in the areas of Armenia and Poland. In a letter to Senator Dole the president said, "I am delighted that the two of you are undertaking such an important journey at this time and I look forward to a firsthand report of your impressions as soon as you return."
At the request of Project Hope the Doles will carry a plane load of relief and rehabilitation supplies destined for their earthquake relief activities in Armenia. A departure news conference will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday, August 18, at Andrews Air Force Base. The topic of the news conference will be the relief and rehabilitation supplies being brought to Armenia. Project Hope officials will be on hand.
The trip comes at a time when Jaruzelski, Walesa and other Polish officials are engaged in negotiations aimed at forming a new Solidarity-led government, possibly the East bloc's first non-communist government. The Doles will also meet with Polish Catholic Cardinal Glemp. Secretary Dole will discuss possible Labor Department projects that are part of the administration's proposed $100 million aid package to Poland.
The audience with King Hassan II of Morocco will focus on his activities within the Arab League aimed at ending the fighting in Lebanon.
