Dear Colonel Olmstead:

This will acknowledge and thank you for your letter of July 17, expressing your interest in seconding President Nixon's nomination at the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach. I have also noted your request that the President meet briefly with all delegates who are POW/MIA relatives.

As I am certain you understand, it is the President and the President alone who chooses those persons to nominate and second him. I have therefore taken the liberty of contacting the President on your behalf, and as soon as a response is received, we will be in further touch with you.

In the meantime, I appreciate very much your kind comments on my behalf, and look forward to seeing you in Miami Beach.

Sincerely yours,

BOB DOLE U. S. Senate

Dear Mr. President:

Enclosed for your consideration is a copy of a self- explanatory letter from Lt. Colonel Loren K. Olmstead, father of a Navy Commander listed as missing in action in Southeast Asia, expressing his interest in second- ing your nomination at the Republican National Convention. You will note Colonel Olmstead has also requested an appointment with you for the delegates to the Convention who are POW/MIA relatives.

It will be appreciated if every possible consideration is given to this request, and I may be advised of your reaction to Colonel Olmstead's requests.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of this matter.

Sincerely yours,

BOB DOLE U. S. Senate

SENATOR BOB DOLE D

Dear Bob Dole:

After having talked with your aide, Mr. Herman, at noon today, apropos my being an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention at Miami next month and telling him something of my desire to be of help in furthering Mr. Nixon's evident candidacy for the Presidency, I would consider it a great honor to be permitted to make a seconding speech to Mr. Nixon's nomination, and request your serious consideration to do that. I'd be glad to prepare some suitable remarks and send you for approval soon, if you like.

As a P.O.W./M.I.A. family representative (since my son, CMDR. Stanley E. Olmstead, U.S.N., is M.I.A. in N. Viet Nam, now in his 7th year as such), I feel that I represent not only our own "Alliance", but also the majority of the families of the "National League of P.O.W. Families" with Hq. in Wash. D.C., in reporting that we approve Pres. Nixon's stance in regard to his handling the P.O.W./M. I.A. problem properly. (Many of us did not approve of Valerie Kushner's bigoted and narrow remarks which she made in her seconding of McGovern's nomination.)

Most of the P.O.W./M. I.A. families do not want to "settle off" for the limited number of Amer. P.O.W.'s reported by Hanoi. We want them all and a strict, full accounting of all M. I.A., also, and we believe that Mr. Nixon will insist on this, whereas the McGovernites make no reference to a strict accounting.

Most of us concerned have faith in Mr. Nixon's ability and integrity and absolutely no "faith" in McGovern or his "Commie" friends.

I would appreciate very much if you would arrange for a 10-15 minute meeting of our P.O.W./M.I.A. delegates with Mr. Nixon at Miami, preferably on 21 Aug. 1972, or as early as possible there, at his convenience.

We congratulate you on your excellent handling of the questions on "Meet the Press" yesterday noon on N.B.C. We were very proud of you and you again made us happy that you are the Nat'l. Chm. of our Party.

Again, thanks for your concern and the very considerable time and efforts that you have spent in behalf of our P.O.W.'s/M.I.A. in S.E. Asia. We have full faith in your determination to continue your talents in their behalf.

Please let me know soon if I can help your program for Mr. Nixon at Miami.

Best regards,

Loren K. Olinstead Loren K. Olmstead Lt. Col., IGD AUS Hq. 37th Inf. Div., WW II S.W. & W. Pac.
