Carrigan Farms
Mooresville, North Carolina
· Spoke to the Society of St. Andrew (SOSA) and representatives from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. Discussed their partnership and SOSA provided briefing about the concept of gleaning and the needs of the organization.
Iredell County Department of WIC
Statesville, North Carolina
· Reviewed process of applying for food assistance by going through the action steps. Learned about nutrition needs of the poor and food insecurity.
· Discussed the length of time for the WIC program (6 months)
· Discussed health services available to the women
· Reviewed what the Food Package entails (milk, juice, eggs, cereal, etc ... )
Diakonos (Fifth Street Ministry) on the homeless and hunger
Statesville, North Carolina
· Received briefing on where the food for the Ministry comes from (food drives, donations, food store)
· The center had been an actual grocery store and has been leased to the Ministry. Due to the clean and wonderful facility (storage freezers, etc ...) they felt it should be a model for other centers.
· The Red Cross had an office on site, as well as the medical facility that is very similar to a Community Health Center
Blue Ridge Community Action

· Briefing and overview of Hunger, Tour of Foothills
· Toured childcare facility
· Discussed nutrition of children and their families and visited several classrooms
· There was also an "adult daycare" center on the site
Mountain View Elementary School Morganton, North Carolina
· Congregate for elderly on fixed income
· Attended lunch of local elderly who were in need

· Visited site where crops are planted to feed the hungry and teach about nutrition
Burke Mission Station (Gardens)

· Met with representatives from the Mission to discuss their needs and the services they provide to the community. Discussed the strong relationship between their facility and the community
· Several employees were former residents of the shelter

· Mayor, Chairman of County Commissioners
· Representatives from Onslow County Ministries; 2nd Chance Mission of Hope; Word of Faith Ministry, Sickle Cell Association; Salvation Army; Each group briefed on what their organization is doing for Onslow and surrounding counties
· A few of the groups worked with the Society of St. Andrew but all voices concern for their lack of food and other needs
