HUMANITARIAN AID CORRIDOR ACT
STATEMENT OF SENATE MAJORITY LEADER BOB DOLE

WASHINGTON - Kansas Senator Bob Dole today issued the following statement on the floor of the U.S. Senate:
I commend Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Representative Joe Kennedy (D-MA) for their leadership in introducing companion legislation to S. 230, the Humanitarian Aid Corridor Act, in the House of Representatives today. Senator Simon and I reintroduced this legislation in the Senate on January 13. This important, bipartisan initiative would maximize the effectiveness of U.S. humanitarian assistance.

The legislation does not single out any one country, but it would force countries that block U.S. humanitarian assistance to choose between ending these actions or ending their eligibility for U.S. foreign assistance. Turkey's illegal and immoral blockade of Armenia is the clearest example of action this legislation would address. As I said while introducing this legislation in the Senate, "U.S. aid to Armenia is far less effective and much more expensive because of Turkey's blockade. More importantly, Armenians freeze and go hungry as a result of actions taken by the Turkish government."

I look forward to rapid and favorable consideration of the Humanitarian Aid Corridor Act in both the House and the Senate.
