Thanks for your letter of June 16, and I regret you felt my earlier letter of May 24 appeared to be a form letter.

As you, of course, realize, I do serve in two capacities, both as Senator for Kansas and as Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Many members of the National League of Families had contacted me in my capacity as National Chairman, and it was only proper that they receive a response from the Committee. However, of course, my primary responsibility is to Kansans, and therefore your letter was answered from my Senate office. However, as pointed out previously, the subject of the platform to be adopted by the Republican Convention in August is a matter for consideration of the Committee, and it was for that reason your letter was subsequently referred to them.

In any event, I appreciate your taking the time to write, and you may be assured of my continued efforts on behalf of American prisoners of war and missing in action. Like you, I also am hopeful they may soon produce the desired results in bringing our men home.

Thanks again for writing, and if we can be of assistance to you in any way, I trust you will contact me. Best wishes.

EVEN THOUGH IT APPEARED TO BE MORE OR LESS A FORM LETTER TO ANSWER ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF FAMILIES OF AMERICAN PRISONERS AND MISSING IN SOUTHEAST ASIA WHO WROTE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS, IT WAS KIND OF YOU TO TAKE NOTE OF OUR PLEA.

WHAT I REALLY WANT TO TELL YOU, HOWEVER, IS THAT (Redacted) TOLD ME FROM THE BEGINNING THAT YOU WERE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT IN YOUR POSITION -- WHICH, I AM SURE, YOU KNEW YOU WERE OR YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TAKEN IT!
