Dear Senator:
The Senate has before it an excellent bill extending the Voting Rights Act of 1965; it should be passed without crippling amendments .
H.R. 6219 would extend the Voting Rights Act for 10 years, permanently ban literacy tests and other devices and extend the protections of the Act to Spanish-speaking and other language minorities. It is a bill which deserves your enthusiastic support.
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 without question is one of the most important civil rights measures ever enacted by Congress. The UAW was proud to be among the original supporters of this landmark legislation. We continue to believe it is vitally important to our nation and the continued health of our democracy.
H.R. 6219 extending the Act and broadening its protections is must legislation. As you know, key sections of the Act expire next month. It is imperative that Congress pass the bill before the August recess and that any dilatory tactics be resisted. We therefore hope you will vote for the bill and against any crippling amendments and be prepared to vote for cloture and prevent undue delays in considering this measure.

Thank you for contacting me about your interest in the Voting Rights Act.
I certainly am supportive of the legislation to extend the Voting Rights Act and intend to do everything within my power to see that this important legislation is passed prior to the August 6 expiration date. While I do have some reservations regarding the procedure by which this legislation was considered in the Senate, I understand its importance to many minority Americans across the country and intend to do everything necessary, including delaying the August recess, to assure that this legislation reaches the President's desk in timely fashion.
