And given our current reputation, and the fact that women candidates are on a roll, all of us running for re-election this year might be wise to let our wives run in our place. And since Barbara Bush's approval rating is double that of the President's, he may also be looking at that idea. *Another subject on which all Senators agree is the fact that we are very fortunate to have a Chaplain like Dick Halverson. Before dinner begins, I'd like to invite Dick to offer the Invocation. This problem can be anticipated since Congressional Quarterly has been carefully monitoring these accounts and reporting of expenditures from these accounts will be in greater detail in future. A $10,000 expense could give rise to a statement such as "the Senate spent $10,000 to give themselves a ritzy dinner." Senator Mitchell is wondering if your respective campaign committees should not pay for this dinner. He plans to tell DSCC that he will have a contribution made to the campaign committee or raise an amount equal to the cost of this dinner. Senator Mitchell asked that I discuss this matter with you to see how you would feel about handling it in this fashion.
