In this Congress alone, the Senate has approved four measures which would go far in helping arrest the illegal drug epidemic in this country, only to see those initiatives fail to receive timely consideration by the House of Representatives. Fortunately, the Speaker of the House has announced that a comprehensive drug control initiative will be considered by that Body during the second week of September. We might now have an opportunity to confront the serious drug problem of our Nation in a bipartisan, bicameral effort toward a drug-free America. In that regard, your assistance in reviewing programs under the jurisdiction of your committee and determining what, if any, legislation will be necessary to combat drug supply and use would be most helpful. I look forward to discussing this matter with you.
