February 18, 1982 TO: SENATOR FROM: RANDY RE : BEECH AND CESSNA SALES Both Beech and Cessna are presently working on projects and have asked for our assistance. BEECH Beech has been planning to show its T-340-1 aircraft in the Air Show in Santiago, Chile on March 5-14, and demonstrate the plane 'in:a number of Latin American countries en route. In a new development today, Argentina evidently wants to buy 100 of the planes, a deal which would mean $150 million to Beach. However, the State Department is delaying in giving them the Temporary Export License required for this activity, Harry George, their Aerospace Marketing Development Manager, claims they must have a decision immediately. Bill Gibb and I have made calls, but Beech is now asking that you call either Haig or Clark to urge approval. I'll continue to do all we can here. Would you like to call? Send a hand- delivered note today? CESSNA Cessna ta currently one of several competitors for the Air Force Next Generation Trainer (NGT) . The recipient will receive an 8 year contract for 650 trainers, possibly up to 1,000 in the long run. Cessna estimates that the contract would bring $1.1 billion to Kansas, and at least . 1,000 additional employees would be needed at their Wallace Aircraft Division, We have been contacted by Jordan Haines and Dick Leavitt, the General Manager of thair Wallace Division. They are not looking for active help now. They feel confident of their proposal, and are afraid of trying to exert too much political pressure. The two competitors are Rockwell (who they think is out of it) , and Fairchild (whose New York representatives are trying to use their clout) . They have asked us to make some gentle inquiries at this point, so that DOD does not make a political decision. in favor of Fairchild. I've made those calls. February 18, 1982 TO : SENATOR FROM : RANDY RE: TITAN II HEARING NEXT FRIDAY Though it probably won't come up in Wichita thought I'd pass along recent Titan II he: We've been called by Tower : 26th, together Titan II hearings Dex: Senator Exon is now beginning to fight plans to retire the Titan II's, saying we need to keep them for strategic reasons. Evidently, he's been pumped up by SAC. Bo has now asked for hearings on the matter. Tower is looking to balance out the hearing to slow down any momentum to reverse the decision to pull them out. They would like you to testify at earing about safety and strategic problems wi“ missiles. I can give you more information return.
