I have called the patient services office of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Katy McGuire in that office will contact Mrs. Whitted directly and then will put her in touch with resource people in Georgia. I felt confident that they will go out of their way to help.

Dear Mr. Dole, 
My son was diagnosed at age 21 with Muscular Dystrophy. He is now 28 yrs. old. Attached you will find a picture of him with his wife and son. There is no history in our families of this disease.

In the last year this disease has progressed very fast and now he has to have assistance with everything he does. He works as a dispatcher for an ambulance company and has high hopes of being able to continue this. We are currently waiting for his Medicare "B" to kick in for him to be able to get his power wheelchair. Rehab is working with us to help with a ramp or lift for a van for him to continue to get back from and to his job.

Mr. Dole, there are two things that I have not been able to find assistance with for a person with a disability whose income is below federal poverty level guidelines and who wants to remain working and independent. I sincerely hope and pray that you may be able to lead us in the right direction for our needs.

(1) Vans for disabled people are very expensive -- more than he can afford. His father is retired and my job situation is unstable at the present time. Do you have any suggestions or ideas where we might possibly look for assistance?

(2) He currently lives in a small apartment that he rents and modifications for the handicapped can not be made. We are thinking of converting a shed in our backyard into a apartment dwelling for him so he can maintain his independence and make it handicapped accessible. Do you have any suggestions or ideas where we might look for assistance?

In one of your campaign speeches on TV I heard you mention the Dole Disabled Foundation. I have no idea what this stands for. We anticipate making some major changes very soon and had no idea where to turn for possible help. Any help you may give will be greatly appreciated.
