January 25, 1991 TO: Senator Dole FROM: Mo West SUBJECT: "The Villages" Dedication (End of Letterhead) You have been asked to make some brief remarks about the significant contributions of the late Dr. Karl Menninger and unveil a commemorative plaque in his honor. Dr. Menninger, Founder and Chairman of The Villages, Inc., died of cancer on July 18 in Topeka. He dedicated his live to the care of abused and neglected children and had a tremendous impact on the field of mental health. You are a trustee of "The Villages Homes for Children," which has served children in Kansas since 1964. The Villages programs are designed to provide support to troubled youth and prevent possible incarceration. The program provides a caring and loving atmosphere to change their direction in life. Mrs. Karl Menninger and his daughter, Rose Mary, will be in attendance as will Topeka Mayor Butch Felker. The plaque will be made in Dr. Menninger's honor in addition to the Villages office. As you already know, you have in the past contributed financially to The Villages. REMARKS OF SENATOR ROBERT J. DOLE AT THE DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR THE VILLAGES OFFICE (End of Title) Thank you. After the events and tension of the past week, can't tell you how good it feels to come home. I am honored to be here this morning, and thank you for the opportunity to say a few words about Dr. Karl A. Menninger, an outstanding human being and a fine Kansan. Dr. Karl was one-of-a-kind, and his passing on July 18 was a tragic loss. Dr. Karl was a remarkable man and obviously a great student. If I recall the story correctly, one of Dr. Karl's medical school professors urged him not to "forget the children." Well, we all know that Dr. Karl certainly paid attention in class and heeded their advice. Dr. Karl did not "forget the children." In fact, he dedicated his life to providing kids the critical assistance and services that some of them needed so desperately. Dr. Karl was visionary, creating a safe haven for our forgotten and helpless children who so often fell through the cracks of our society. As Dr. Karl's motto states: "The greatest natural resource we have is our children. The way we treat them will indicate the future of our society." I don't think anyone could articulate that more eloquently. I think everyone here today shares his vision and will continue to pursue his dreams and aspirations for tomorrow's adults and tomorrow's leaders. Although Dr. Karl is not with us today his legacy lives on in the countless children whose lives he touched and made better. In such trying times it's comforting to think about men like Dr. Menninger who exemplify all that makes this country great. Giving, selflessness, and a commitment to work for change and to make a difference no matter what the odds. Helping those who are less fortunate is much alive in Kansas. That spirit is alive because of people like Dr. Karl Menninger, who recognized that one-to-one caring can make a big difference in a troubled life. 1/16/91 04:58 DRAFT #2 CONTACT: JUDY KAY 913/295-2745 (o), 913/273-1870 (h) SENATOR DOLE SCHEDULE - JANUARY 24-26 THURSDAY, JANUARY 24 LV.
