MEMORANDUM Date: December 31, 1993 To: Senator Dole From: Alec Vachon Re: Various Gold Seals 1. William Moon Holiday/follow up --You received a letter on his behalf (attached) and spoke with him in October. I arranged for Peter Thomas, who organized the amputee meeting in September, to provide Moon with information about advanced prosthetic devices and a copy of the book, You're Not Alone (personal stories by amputees)(Thomas letter also attached). According to Thomas, Moon had arranged for a sophisticated artificial arm, but was somewhat discouraged about returning to his dental practice. Thomas strongly encouraged his return. 2. Don Wyman Holiday/follow up --You met him at amputee meeting (he cut his own leg off in a forest after a tree fell on it). You earlier sent notes to other meeting participants (TYs for books). 3. Jerome McEniry Holiday --You spoke to him earlier this year, and he sent you a nice note (attached). A holiday note might be a nice boost for his morale. 4. Tim Steineqer Holiday/follow up to his December 3rd note (attached), with photos from the dedication of the ASK Independent Living Center in August and an article about him hunting. 5. James Shields TY/holiday --Shields sent you a Clayton "sticky board" (see attached brochure) (original letter from Shields did not reach me). DO YOU WANT TO: KEEP CLAYTON BOARD FOR YOUR OWN USE. DONATE IT TO APPROPRIATE CHARITY (I UNDERSTAND SHIELDS LETTER ASKED YOU TO DO THAT IF YOU DID NOT PLAN TO USE IT YOURSELF). [Second line is checkmarked] -1 6. Ed Roberts TY/holiday --You received a letter and "Certificate of Appreciation" (attached) from Ed Roberts, President of the World Institute on Disability, for your talk before the conference "U.S. Role in International Issues of Disability," on November 16th. (You may remember greeting Ed --he was the severely disabled man, lying in a large wheelchair, at front of the room.) 7. Daniel Caliendo, M.D. Inspirational/holiday --you sent me the first part of a 3part Wichita Eagle series (full series attached) on Dr. Daniel Caliendo, a 51-year old emergency room physician who became paraplegic from a farming accident. As the note mentions, the federal government funds a program calls AgrAbility, that assists disabled farmers. Kansas does not have its own project (see attached sheet), but I have been encouraging folks at Kansas State to apply for one. 8. Alfred H. Kingon Holiday/TY --You received a note with an article (attached) about his autistic son, Michael, written by his wife. -2
