Memorandum Date: October 28, 1993 To: Senator Dole From: Alec Vachon Re: Dole Foundation (End of Letterhead) You returned to me a memo on Dole Foundation with comment "See me later" (attached). (Incidentally, I received memo on Wednesday, following my return from trip to annual meeting of American Public Health Association in San Francisco, as I wrote you earlier.) Would you like me to schedule an appointment? Memorandum Date: October 17, 1993 To: Senator Dole From: Alec Vachon Re: Comments\Dole Foundation (End of Letterhead) You sent me a report entitled "Campaign Feasibility Study," which recommends a strategy to build a $10 million endowment. You commented, "Not much of a report" (see attached). Incidentally, the Foundation received $100,000 from Bette Perot to prepare the report, spent $25,000 on it. To properly evaluate the report, I would need to know your hopes and goals for the Foundation. Although like many reports it states the obvious, it also raises two important issues: (1) the need for an endowment if the Foundation is to endure; and (2) governance. Regarding endowment, to fund even the modest $1.3 million current budget solely from return on investment would require a larger endowment than planned. Parenthetically, another young foundation, the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation created in 1991, is also building an endowment --with a $2 million/year pledge for 5 years from its parent, Mitsubishi Electric. If there is any action or follow up you would like on this matter, please let me know. THE DOLE FOUNDATION FOR EMPLOYMENT OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES MEMORANDUM Date: November 17, 1992 To: Senator Dole From: Paul Hearne Subject: Feasibility Study Final Report (End of Letterhead) Attached is the final report of the feasibility study. We can talk about it when I see you. Some good news, IBM has agreed to donate a complete computer system for the office. Moreover, Mr. William Ferguson, CEO of NYNEX, will be the corporate chair of our fundraising concert in New York in March. This should net us approximately $100,000. Attachment - Memorandum to Management & Feasibility Study Final Report Senator Dole, Paul has indicated to me that he would like to meet with you the week after Thanksgiving. Do you want me to schedule a meeting? yes no, not at this time Note written on page: Alex - not much of a report
