MEMORANDUM Date: March 7, 1994 To: Senator Dole From: Alec Vachon Re: Congratulations Note to Tony Coelho *Attached for signature is a note to Tony Coelho re his appointment as Chairman of the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. He was appointed last Thursday by the President (see attached AP wire story);this position does not require Senate confirmation. *The subtext to this letter is that the President's Committee should focus on providing sound, credible advice and technical assistance to businesses, rather than engaging in strident advocacy. It has been rumored that Justin Dart, the former Chairman, alienated many longtime business supporters of the President's Committee by such actions. *I think Coelho plans to take this approach in any case --he said as much when I visited with him informally on Friday (I had not met him before) at President's Committee's offices on F Street. *I also expect Coelho will be making a courtesy call on you sometime in the next few weeks. A formal reception is also to be held in about six weeks. *Incidentally, Coelho was intrigued with the upcoming 25th anniversary of your maiden speech to the Senate (see accompanying memo). He thought aloud about having some event in your honor if so, he will be in touch with you directly about that. BOB DOLE UNITED STATES SENATE March 7, 1994 Dear Tony, Just a brief note to congratulate you on your appointment as Chairman of the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. As you know, I greatly valued your advice throughout Congressional action on ADA, and look forward to your leadership at the President's Committee as we face the challenge of making ADA work --both for people with disabilities and business. Historically, the President's Committee has served an important role in providing sound, credible information and encouragement to the business community on disability issues, and I can think of no one better suited to continue that tradition. If I can be helpful in any way, please do not hesitate to let me know. With best personal regards, Sincerely, Bob Dole The Honorable Tony Coelho Wertheim Schroder & Co. 787 Seventh Avenue New York, New York 10019-6016 23 AP 03-03-94 04:02 EST 22 Lines. Copyright 1994.
