MEMORANDUM Date: February 10, 1994 To: Senator Dole From: Alec Vachon (initialed) Re: Sponsor Betts Award Reception * John Kemp asks (see attached letter) if you would sponsor an October reception for the 1994 Betts Award winner. * As you may recall, the Betts Award honors a living individual who has made outstanding contributions to improving the quality of life for people with physical disabilities. You have helped select the Award winner since its inception in 1990 (with Mo or myself representing you). The Award has become well respected (if only because it comes with a $50,000 check). DO YOU WISH TO SPONSOR THE BETTS AWARD RECEPTION (W/ THE UDERSTANDING THAT YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND)? YES (yes was selected) NO cc: Mariam Bechtel (page 2) The Henry B. Betts Award (letterhead) January 18, 1994 The Honorable Robert J. Dole United States Senate 141 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, D. C. 20510 Dear Senator Dole, I have been asked, by Fred Prince and Prince Charitable Trusts, to chair the Henry B. Betts Award jury again this year. One of my immediate duties is to secure an appropriate site for the presentation of the 1994 Betts Award. Fred and I believe that the Russell Caucus Room would provide a distinguished and meaningful setting for the event. I know that reservation of this room must be sponsored by a Senator, therefore I seek your help in that role. As a Betts Award Jury veteran, you recall that the Award is presented in the autumn. This year October 17, 27 and 28 are the dates proposed. Will one of these dates be available in the Russell Caucus Room? The past four Betts Award juries have selected outstanding laureates and we anticipate another potent year. We have been fortunate to have two very able representatives from your office, Maureen West and Alexander Vachon, involved in this selection process. We are grateful for their strong contributions, and count on your continued support. Your interest and leadership on behalf of the 1994 Betts Award continue to be noted with respect by the health care and disability communities. Yours sincerely, John D. Kemp, Chairman 1994 Henry B.
